Penang postpones ceramah

GEORGE TOWN: The Penang government has postponed the Bersih-related ceramah on the island and mainland scheduled for Thursday night, in compliance with a court order obtained by the police.

The ceramah were slated to start at 6.30pm at Pesta Pulau Pinang site in Sungai Nibong and 8pm at the Tapak Ekspo Seberang Jaya in Seberang Jaya.

The last-minute cancellation was in compliance with two court orders from the George Town and Bukit Mertajam magistrate courts on Wednesday.

The court orders were obtained by the police under Section 98 of the Penal Code.

Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, who announced the postponement at a press conference in Komtar Thursday morning said he was made aware of the orders only Wednesday night.

"I am unhappy that the police had applied for the orders without even talking to me about the events which are organised by the state government.

"Nonetheless, we respect the law and will comply with the orders,” he said.

Lim added the ceramah would now be held on July 10.

Banners have been put up in several parts on Penang island to announce the ceramah in Sungai Nibong.

The speakers slotted had included Lim, PAS deputy president Mohamed Sabu, Bersih 2.0 chairman Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan, PKR deputy president Azmin Ali and vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar.

...it is being made to look like this is about the Chinese being unfair to the Malays and that the Malays are merely bringing attention to this ‘injustice’. It is, after all, the business of PERKASA and the Malay Chamber of Commerce to look after Malay interests.
